Greenstone Nonprofit

December 2008

Greenstone Nonprofit's mission is to identify and build schools or similar projects to enable education for both boys and girls in countries and locations where the opportunity was previously unavailable.

NepalThe Greenstone Nonprofit team is in the process of being assembled. The initial concept is to seek and recruit a minimum of 2 individuals in North America, Europe/Africa, and Asia/Pacific. Individuals will be asked to contribute passion, time, geographical expertise, logistical expertise, policy expertise, non-profit expertise and fund raising capabilities. Monetary compensation for these contributions is not planned in the foreseeable future.

Operational Model

The model that Greenstone will employ is based on a few, simple, proven concepts.
First, a good understanding of the identified locality is critical. There is no substitute for local knowledge. We will therefore select areas where members are already knowledgeable and supplement this with targeted research. We will develop in country advocates that are dedicated to assisting with the successful transfer and implementation of our aid model in country. This assistance will include regulation/policy, communication with community and working logistically within a region where Western type infrastructure does not exist.

CambodiaSecond, the structure that Greenstone will use is based on a “community-sharing” model. This model assumes that the best way to implement a project is if the community understands the objective, is excited about the opportunity and actively participates in the execution and realization of the project. Every community, no matter how humble their assets, can contribute to the construction of a school or similar educational project. All communities possess ideas/history/culture, human capital and labor, land and simple building materials like wood, rock, fabric, etc. Local ingenuity and pride are strong and necessary forces to harness for the successful implementation and ongoing operation of a school or similar project. The concept of local contribution and participation has been proven time and again. It is integral to the success of Room to Read, John Wood’s organization that has implemented schools and libraries in several countries around the world (read Leaving Microsoft to Change the World, by John Wood and visit the website) and Greg Martenson's work in Pakistan (read Three Cups of Tea and visit the website).

Strategy and Implementation

Greenstone will spend the next six months recruiting members and setting up the organization. The goal is to be operational by June 2009. During this period we will also be soliciting donor pledges. While the initial goal is to build the first school, organizational development is geared towards the objective of building ten schools. The rough estimate of the cost of each school is a maximum of $25,000. Our fund raising target is therefore $250,000.

NepalThe country targeted for the first school is Nepal. There are a variety of reasons. First of all, some of our members have had the opportunity to live and travel in Nepal and are familiar with its culture and regions and already have support contacts in Nepal. Second, Nepal is a poor country with a rich culture and a very positive approach to life. They are also used to interacting with Americans. Third, the government is fairly stable and open to assistance from the outside.

Other countries are candidates for educational projects. These include Cambodia, Laos, Viet Nam, Tanzania and Botswana. These are only initial places for consideration. Actual implementation will be driven by a variety of factors including founding members and their respective knowledge, donor preference, quality of local contacts and sponsors, etc. The one thing that is clear is that there is not a shortage of deserving children around the world that do not have the opportunity to receive an education.

Donations

The great thing about a small, targeted nonprofit organization like Greenstone is that we have passionate members, guarantee that all the money donated goes directly into our educational projects and can offer unparalleled visibility into project status for donors.

ZimbabweDonations of any size are welcome. Small, grassroots donations have the power to change the lives of so many children that simply do not share the fortune of being born into a wealthy country. Your awareness and understanding that an investment in education is not only an investment in the future of so many kids but is also a compounding investment in the world as a whole.

For corporate donors and individuals of sufficient means, we offer you the opportunity to have a significant impact on the creation of an entire school. This type of gift can have an incredible effect on an entire community. In return Greenstone can provide you customized monthly status updates, the ability to customize the school and facilities, donor name and recognition status or the opportunity to travel and meet community leaders or attend the coronation ceremony.

Tax Status 501 (c)(3)

Greenstone Nonprofit is presently in process to apply for 501 (c)(3) status. This is the designation required for donations to the organization to be tax deductible.

Benefits

LaosWhere would any of us be without an education, without the ability to read? I grew up in a loving family but one of very modest resources. Without scholarships and student loans I would never have attended universities and had the opportunities I have enjoyed. And yet millions of kids around the world may never have the opportunity for any formal education.

An investment in education is an investment in children’s futures and an investment in the fabric of human society. An increase in education has a direct correlation with a decrease in poverty and disease and an increase in mutual awareness and security for all.

Take the step. Help another generation of kids grow up with the ability to do great things and inspire the world. Give them a chance. Give them the chance all of us have had and have utilized our entire lives. An education for all:  boys and girls. It’s never been a better time to reach out and bring change to the world!
